MUNGO MacCALLUM. Peter Dutton says doctors can’t e trusted.

Kerryn Phelps is not just a doctor: according to Scott Morrison, Peter Dutton and their Murdoch mouthpieces, she is a shaker of worlds.

Her bill – or rather her amendments to the government’s own bill — to allow doctors rather than bureaucrats to assess sick asylum seekers for treatment in Australia will not only simply dismantle the entire apparatus of border security.

It will, of course, unleash armadas of leaky boats our navy will be powerless to resist, and allow 400 – or perhaps 1000, or perhaps 100,000, pick any figure you like out of the air – into our pristine land, clogging our already overburdened populations, even if they can be incarcerated in detention centres at huge expense to the long-suffering taxpayers

But what is worse, even the indefatigable Idaho, our dauntless Dutton, will be unable to prevent them, because on the way they will have been transformed into rapists, murderers and paedophiles.

Well, at least it will be a change from the years of John Howard, when asylum seekers were routinely demonised as terrorists, drug dealers, carriers of disease and even infanticides. The current libel of choice has perhaps been work-shopped through the focus groups, in the hope that the new deranged denigration will resonate better with women voters who have deserted the coalition in justifiable disgust.

And apart from arrant bullshit, it doesn’t make sense, especially when the ailing detainees are called not just rapists, murderers and paedophiles, but convicted rapists, murderers and paedophiles. If they have been convicted, they should presumably be in jail, and if they have been released, and the authorities know about it, their status would surely been notedandrecorded..

Or perhaps there is a third possibility: Morrison and Dutton, using deliberate leaks from their tame spooks as cover, are just making it up as they go along. In the past they have always used national security as the basic scare, but given that the Phelps bill would still give Dutton a veto when there was a real threat to national security, they have, as they say, moved along.

And it should be said that Phelps, while able to change the course of Australian history with a single gesture, is not really a villain, — merely a well meaning dupe, a puppet of the arch enemy Malcolm Turnbull, and being manipulated by the utterly evil Bill Shorten and his Green-Labor treacherous plans to destroy the commonwealth.

And to prove it, Dutton, after deep research, discovered that both Bob Brown and Richard di Natale are medical doctors – just the two of them could authorise the invading hordes and there would be nothing to prevent them. Apart from the easily verifiable fact that Brown and di Natale are no longer on the medical register and cannot authorize anything, the implication is that they would be deeply corrupt.

And by extension the entire profession is highly suspect, subject, as Tony Abbott warned, to compassion, an unforgiveable sin. Only the brutality of public servants and politicians can hold the fort, the base.

In reality, some 900 medical evacuees are already in Australia, and Morrison is talking about a compromise (to, yet again, avoid parliament) which would presumably allow more. But don’t worry, under Morrison and Dutton you are completely safe.

Of course there are already plenty of native born rapists, murderers and paedophiles in Australia — some in prison, where they automatically receive the medical treatment they require. And absolutely no evidence has been educed to explain how many, if any, are on Nauru or Manus.

But this is a matter of national sovereignty. We will decide which rapists and paedophiles will come to Australia, and the circumstances in which they rape, kill and molest. There’s an election slogan for you.

  1. Peter Best says:

Ian the Climate Denialist Potato has suggested that his uncle, Peter Dutton, should instruct the navy to allow some refugee boats, crammed with godless heathen rapists, to penetrate our virgin shores so that Bill Shorten’s 5th columnist treachery can be exposed. If the navy shows a deficit of patriotism surely someone can arrange for some patrol boats to hit the slips and leave a gap through which cunning orientals can slide in the hope of impregnating our spotless nation with their evil spawn. Our gulags are more than a match for these so-called “people”.

    You’ve nailed it Mungo

  3. Geoff Andrews says:

Mungo, I’ll bet the first draft of this essay was straight, up & down, serious. Then you
re-read it, changed a few phrases; dropped in a snide comment or two; inserted a more appropriate adjective between gritted teeth and voila: a fine piece of satire.
Trouble is: they’re beyond satire now, but don’t let that stop you.

  4. “Idaho”? Kipfler, Adolf Kipfler.
